You also have the normal Wiimote that you have to use for some games.
The new controller let's you browse the web, play board games in a very realistic way and also has the basics like a gyroscope and an accelerometer. This thing let's you see things in a game that is impossible to see on a TV screen. Like if you are playing golf you can see the ball on the controller on the ground and just strike it with the Wiimote. Basically this thing is the package for gamers, casual and serious alike. Update: It seems all the rumors were right. But many people argue that the Wii U has not started the next gen and can hardly compete with the current gen. But finally all comes down to your choice of games. If Mario and Zelda is your thing, go for it.
